From the library of Erik Julius Christian Scavenius (1877–1962), who served as Denmark’s foreign minister during three pivotal periods: 1909–1910, 1913–1920, and 1940–1943 and as prime minister from 1942 to 1943, during the German occupation that lasted until the elected Danish government ceased to operate. Scavenius played a central role in shaping Danish foreign policy during critical moments in the country's modern history, including World War I, the Schleswig plebiscites and the German occupation of Denmark. His legacy remains the subject of ongoing debate and he continues to be one of the most controversial figures in Danish political history.
