Contemporary half leather, spine with four raised bands and coloured leather title labels. Five volumes bound in one. From the library of the Norwegian collector Jonas Skougaard. Front board of vol. 1 detached. (272; 280; 316; 286; 244) pp.
An attractive copy of the first collected edition of Holberg’s comedies as they stood in 1731. When the Grønnegade Theatre closed and Holberg ceased writing comedies, he gathered his plays into five volumes under the title Den Danske Skue-Plads (The Danish Stage). The edition contains ten previously unpublished comedies, including Henrich og Pernille, Diderich Menschen-Skræk, and Hexerie eller Blind Alarm. Holberg was the first Danish author to achieve international recognition and to be translated into several languages. Before him, Danes lacked confidence in their own language and regarded Denmark as a peripheral outpost to the great literary traditions of France, England, and Germany. His celebrated comedies are still performed today. A very rare early edition, containing ten plays never before printed. Ehrencron-Müller I, 180-190; Skougaard I, 105; Johansen 13, 1-5.
