Later, much enlarged and improved, edition of Comenius’s ‘Orbis Pictus’ - the first widely used children's textbook with pictures and arguably the most influential textbook for children in the late 17th- and early 18th century. “The historical importance of this schoolbook for beginners in Latin lies in its educational approach. Comenius’s simple encyclopedic format, consisting of keyed pictures with descriptive columns of bilingual text, reflects his progressive educational approach, as does the richly varied content” (Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Children’s Literature).
The first edition was published in 1658.
