Lund is often considered one of the pioneers of Brazilian paleontology

Peter Wilhelm Lund (1801 –1880) was a Danish paleontologist and naturalist known for his significant contributions to the field of paleontology in Brazil. Lund spent much of his life in Brazil, particularly in the state of Minas Gerais. He arrived in Brazil in 1833 and dedicated several decades to studying its natural history, particularly its fossilized remains.

Lund conducted extensive research on the rich fossil deposits found in the limestone caves of the Lagoa Santa region in Minas Gerais. His work in the 19th century contributed significantly to the understanding of extinct megafauna, including giant ground sloths and saber-toothed cats, that once inhabited the region. His discoveries provided crucial insights into the prehistoric fauna of South America.
