First appearance of this importent paper describing for the first time a new species of the Jurassic flying reptile.
The skull was collected in the 1880s by D.W. Purdon, who is honoured in the specific name "Scaphognatus Purdoni, s Newton nmd it. It was recognizd as a distinct genus only decades later in 1919 by Gustav von Arthaber.
