A Record of the Black Prince

New York, B. Appleton & Co., 1848.

8vo. (16,5 x 12 cm.). In original state with black covers moulded from a mixture of papier-mâché and plaster to imitate a Gothic carved wood-binding. Spine in black leather with title in raised letters. Binding in near mint state. 32 chromolithographed pages (incl. title-page) with framed text on thick cardboard. All edges gilt. The gluing was originally bad, so this copy is neathly reinforced in joints. Clean and fine.

First American publication. It was published in London the year before 1847 in the same design and execution. "It was the first of the so-called 'papier mache' bindings, contrived to look like carved ebony... the result was splendidly gothic and impressive." (Ruari Mclean).
