Later richly illustrated edition - and here in essentially untouched condition - of one of the most important and influential Italian travel guides of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The work has its origins in the ”Itinerarium Italiae rerumque romanarum libri tres” first published in Latin at Antwerp in 1600 by Joannes Moretus of the Plantin press on the occasion of the Jubilee. Compiled by Francesco Scoto (Franz Schott, 1548–1622) - a jurist and traveller from Antwerp - the work was originally intended as a practical tool for pilgrims travelling to Italy. It subsequently enjoyed extraordinary success appearing in numerous editions and in Latin, Italian, French and English and became an indispensable aid for young aristocrats on the ”Grand Tour” Travel guides of this kind developed in Italy during the sixteenth century. Earlier works had mainyl consisted of accounts by pilgrims visiting the principal sites of Christianity whereas the new guidebooks were specifically intended to guide travellers on their journeys. The earliest Italian examples were concise “postal guides” giving routes, distances, travel times and costs and the locations of post stations. From the seventeenth century and onwards these works developed into real travel guides, incorporating descriptions of cities and monuments, historical and demographic information together with practical advice for travellers. Scoto's work was particularly influential in this development. The first Italian illustrated edition appeared around 1601, edited by Pietro Bertelli and Francesco Bolzetta, and later editions were enlarged with engraved maps and views. The work is arranged in three main itineraries: from Milan to Florence; from the Tuscan coast towards France through Liguria; and from northeastern Italy southwards to Rome and Sicily.
