Sartre's landmark essay collection about anti-semitism, "Reflexions on the Jewish Question" (also "Anti-Semite and the Jew"), was written shortly after the liberation of Paris from German occupation in 1944.
Noticing that discussions of postwar France failed to address the return of French Jews deported by the Nazis, Sartre was concerned that the French people lacked understanding and concern for what actually happened to the Jews. Thus he set about writing a historically-placed critique of anti-Semitism, intending to express solidarity with the Jews.
