The work is giving detailed descriptions of the most important toxic flowers in Germany and is richly illustrated in 48 handcoloured plates intended to aid identification. Combining botany, pharmacology and toxicology, Brandt and Ratzeburg's study is a fine example of the growing scientific interest in poisonous plants and their medical significance during the early nineteenth century.
