ROLLE, (MICHEL).

De L'Evanouissement des Quantitez inconnues dans la geometrie analytique.

(Paris, Jean Boudot, 1711). 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1709". Pp. 419-461.

First printing of one of Rolle's main papers on analytical geometry. Rolle was perhaps the first to use the term "analytical geometry" in print in the sense of the term used today. "By analytic geometry Rolle understood research of one or the other of two types: in the one, geometric questions are transformed into problems of algebra, and in the other, one is occupied only with the graphical solutions of these problems. That is his view was thoroughly Cartesian."(Boyer "History of Analytic geometry", pp. 155.
