This work was the first British monograph on the subject and it had a profound influence on the science of the strenght of materials and it established the sructural theory.
The offered item is the importent 4th edition of the famous "Essay on the Strength...", 1817 and here Barlow states "I have thought it right to remodel the whole, and to introduce into it a great variety of matter not found in the original Work" (The Preface).
