Folio.(40x25,5 cm). Later marbled boards with the original engraved title-label to front board. Some browning and fowing throughout, especially at lower right corners. Title-pages with larger repairs, consisting of Japanese paper to verso, virtually no loss; dedication-leaf with one repaired tear. 12 pp. of text and 15 (of 16 or 18?) large engraved plates, numbered I-IX (i.e. each uncoloured out-line-plate repeated in coloured state so that the plates appear in uncoloured enface hand-coloured state to describe the process of, first drawing and then colouring). One plate definitely lacking (plate I coloured), presumably lacking plate VIII in both coloured and uncoloured state, but containing both of plate IX (which are usually not present? Or not supposed to be included?). Six of the plates (both those coloured and those not) engraved in Paris by Alexandre Moisy (1763 - ca. 1827) and one (both the coloured and uncoloured one) is signed "A.P. Eisen" (Anton Paul Eisen, born 1777).

First (and only) edition of this extremely rare manual for flower-drawing and water-colouring containing seven beautiful hand-coloured plates of the finest quality. The work is unknown to all bibliographies, and the only reference we have been able to find to it is that of a contemporary review (in Allgemeine Literaturzeitung, Jahrgang 1803, Nr. 214), where it is stated that the work is printed in folio, contains 12 pages of text, 8 coloured plates and the same eight plates merely printed in black outline, as well as the price which was 4 Reichstaler ("1802. Fol. 12 S. Text, nebst 8 ausgemalten Kupfertafeln und ebendieselben bloss Umrisse Schwartz abgedruckt. (4 Rthlr.)."). Apart from this there is one single copy in WorldCat (complete?), and we have been able to find one auction record (this copy has one uncoloured plate and 8 plates in coloured and uncoloured state, i.e. not complete according to the contents-list either, but with all eight coloured plates that have been mentioned in the only bibliographical reference [above]). Furthermore it seems that the Russian State Library has a copy in their exclusive collection of "Meisterwerke der graphischen Kunst und Buchgestaltung", which contains 10 German historical printings. They state that Campe's "Theoretisch-practische Anleitung ...", Lpz., 1802 is among the oldest works in this collection, and furthermore that it is printed on handmade paper and contains a dedication for the Russian Zaress Maria Fedorovna (the wife of Paul I); we can find no collation of this copy. The present copy consists of all the 12 leaves of text (i.e. title-page, dedication-leaf for Maria Fedorowna, 2 pages of introduction (dated Nürnber, September 1802, Campe), and 6 pages of explanation to the plates. Apart from that it contains the uncoloured plate I (unsigned), the uncoloured and coloured plates II-VII + IX (Plates II-VI + IX engraved by Moisy, and VII engraved by Eisen). Thus, in comparison to the plate-explanations (pp. (7)-12), the coloured plate I and plates VIII, both coloured and uncoloured, are missing; however, according to the only reference (that in Allgemeine Literaturzeitung, 1803), there should only be 8 coloured and 8 uncoloured plates. Both this reference and Campe's own explanation of plate IX state that the plates with fruits are actually intended for another volume (which never appeared?), and as such the plates IX should be considered an appendix ("Da es eigentlich meine Absicht nicht war, schon im gegenwärtigen Hefte Früchte zu liefern, so bitte ich dieses Blatt blos wie eine kleine Zugabe anzusehen, bis ich im zweiten Hefte etwas Bedeutenderes in diesem Fache geben werde", p. 11). As such, this ninth plate may not actually have been in most of the copies that appeared which may account for the contemporary reference (review) stating only eight plates. Whether the second issue, which was to contain bouquets and fruits (as stated in the preface) ever appeared is unconfirmed and doubtful. The plates and colouring are of exquisite quality and great accuracy, by far surpassing that of regular pattern-books of the period. The plates resemble the work of the great Dutch painter Gerard van Spaendonck (1746 - 1822), who painted with both oil and watercolours and is famous for his "Fleurs Dessinees d'apres Nature" (1799-1801), which consists of 24 engraved plates for students of floral painting - much resembling the present plates.

LINNAEUS, CAROLUS - CARL von LINNÉ. - Materia Medica, Liber I. de Plantis. Materia Medica, Liber I. de Plantis. Secundum: Genera, Loca, Nomina, Qualitates, Vires, Differentias, Durationes, Simplicia, Modos, Usus, Synonyma, Culturas, Praeparata, Potentias, Composita, Digestus. [ALL].

Holmiae (Stockholm), Laurentius Salvius, 1749. 8vo. Nice cont. full calf. Front hinge very neatly and professionally restored. Five raised bands and gilt red leather title-label o richly gilt back. Discrete stamp to front free end-paper (Dr. B.C. Ingels/ Gent). A bit of brownspotting and faint dampstaining throughout. Free end-paper renewed. Engraved "Pharmacopoea"-frontispiece (by Bergqvist), (32), 252 pp. + one folding plate (by Bergqvist).

The very rare first edition of Linné's most important medical work, the hugely influential work, which quickly became a real manual for physicians and druggists, - fully complete with the engraved frontispiece and the folded engraved plate. "A new phase of Linnaeus' life began in the spring of 1741. After a rather scandalous fight for tenure he was appointed professor of practical medicine at the University of Uppsala; in 1742, through a sort of job exchange, he took over the more suitable chair of botany, dietetics, and material medica. For the rest of his life Linnaeus remained in Uppsala as professor of medicine, while his fame as premier botanist spread throughout the world." (D.S.B. VIII:375). In the late 1740'ies, Linné finally united his knowledge of the two fields in writing. His knowledge of medicinal plants, which bound his interest in botany together with his medical studies, finally took form in his medicinal magnum opus - his "Materia Medicina", which he published in 1749. With this work Linné applied his botanical knowledge to medicine and classified the "officinal" plants according to his System, simultaneously examining them according to their medicinal value. The present work thus constitutes a highly important list of plants that could be used as medicine, and it soon became an important manual for physicians as well and druggists. Before Linné's "Materia Medicina", the "Stockholm Pharmacopoeia" (1686), which was based on similar works from e.g. Germany, was used as the official list of known medicines. Linné, however, while classifying the plants herein according to his own System, deemed it useless for treating ailments, and he modernized the list by excluding no less than 130 plants and substituting them with others, which he primarily selected himself on the basis of his own experiences, and explaining the reason for choosing them. It is this list which constitutes his seminal "Materia Medica". This important work thus came to found the modern teaching of pharmacology, and for several decades it was used in the teaching of medicine all over Europe. Due to Linné's "Materia Medicina", the Swedish medical authorities became aware of the need for a modernization of national medicine, and thus in 1775 the first national Swedish Pharmaxcopoeia appeared - primarily prompted by the present work by Linné. Though the present work is sometimes cited as being in three parts, this is not correct, as only the first part (on plants) was completed by Linné himself, and the works described as the second (on animals) and third (on minerals) parts of it, which appeared in 1763, were not by him. They were unauthorized productions based on Linnéan dissertations, and he was not himself involved in the production. A pirated edition of the present work appeared in the same year, in Amsterdam, and the second edition appeared in 1772 with a pirated edition in 1773. The work was highly popular, and by 1787, five editions of the work had appeared. Soulsby: 968 (erroneously calling for two plates). Hulth: p. 60 (erroneusly mentioning neither frontispiece nor the folded plate).

[In: Denkschriften der Kaiserlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Mathematisch-Naturwissenschaftliche Classe. Fünfter Band].

Wien, 1853. Large 4to. Extract from "Denkschriften..." bound in a beautiful recent dark green half calf binding in contemporary style, w. gilt title and gilt line-ornamentation to spine. Vellum corners, and green and brown marbled paper over boards. Some very minor browning. A beautiful and very handsome copy. Bound with the title-page and contents-leaf of the entire volume; Pp. 107- 110 + all 12 plates (one of them is printed on both recto and verso, out of the thus 13 plates, 8 are coloured).

The rare first printing of this seminal article, which constitutes the first work on the "nature printing" process (also called "Naturselbstdruk", "Originaldruck", "photoxygraphie", or "typographia naturalis"), and which not only explains the process for the first time, but which also depicts the perfection of the technique (with the 12 magnificent plates). It is also this article which coins the term "Naturselbstdruck" ("nature printing") and "Originaldruck". Auer begins the article with stating that three great moments stand out in the cultural history of the peoples in respect to press, namely the invention of the script, Gutenberg's artistic printing process, and the discovery of how NATURE gives itself to PRINTING (P. 107: "Drei grosse Momente ragen in der Cultur-Geschichte der Völker in Bezug auf die Presse hervor - die erfindung der Schrift - Gutenbergs künstliche Druckform - und die Entdeckung, wie die NATUR SELBST zum DRUCKE sich hingibt."), and then he goes on to explain, how it is possible, in seconds and with almost no costs, to procure a printing-plate, which resembles any original to such a degree that one could mistake it for the original, without employing an engraver or an illustrator. Before Auer goes on to explain the circumstances under which the article as well as the discovery of the nature printing came about, he concludes the first section by stating that "The quickest manufacturing, unsurpassed resemblance to the original, an innumerable number and the greatest inexpensiveness of the obtained imprints are the most characteristic properties of this procedure which has been discovered in the Wiener k.k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei." (p. 107: "Schnellste Anfertigung, unübertreffliche Ähnlichkeit mit dem Originale, zahllose Menge und grösste Wohlfeilheit der erlangten Abdrücke sind die bezeichnendsten Eigenschaften dieses in der Wiener k.k. Hof- und Staatsdruckerei entdeckten Verfahrens."). The Austrian printer, inventor, and botanical illustrator, Alois Auer (1813 - 1869) was highly regarded for his printing skills, his typographical knowledge, and his inventive character. In 1841 he became the director of the Austrian State Printing House, which produced illustrated volumes of scientific interest, and he was widely active during the 1840s and 1850s, during which he produced a number of interesting and important works, the most important one being his seminal work on the nature printing process, which was the first work on the subject. In "The Discovery of the Nature Printing-Process", Auer set out to demonstrate and explain that which he saw as a mile-stone in the history of printing. By describing and depicting in detail the use of the material itself that needed to be depicted (e.g. rocks, wood, plant, lace) by impressing it into gum or upon lead, he intended to produce "artistical-scientific objects", a technique by which one could greatly reduce the problems and costs of producing works of natural history. The tecnique was wisely used by botanists (such as Ettinghausen and Pokrony) and illustrators (such as Bradbury). In 1854 the work was printed in book form for the first time.

This copy has belonged to Franz von Dietrichstein (1570-1636), Cardinal and Bishop of Olmütz, having his printed label pasted on lower margin of titlepage: "Ex Bibliotheca Cardinalis & Principis á Dietrichstaini"

First edition of Alpinus' most important medical work, which constitutes one of the earliest studies on non-European medicine. Alpini was the first of the Italian physician-botanists of the sixteenth century to examine the plants outside the context of their therapeutic uses. Although he shared his contemporaries' reverence for the past, he helped to advance the frontiers of botanical science by taking advantage of knowledge gained through his travels. After three years in Egypt, he returned to Venice. In 1594 the Venetian Senate elected him 'lettore dei simplici' (reader in simples) at the University of Padua. Alpini's interest in medicine was expressed in several books, of which the most important was 'De medicina Aegyptiorum' - the item offered. This work, like his study of Egyptian plants, the first of its kind, was based on personal experience. Primarely an examination of contemporary (i.e. Turkish) medicine, it ranks as one of the earliest studies of non-European medicine. Although he took a dim view of local customs, Alpini was sufficiently impressed by novel therapeutic practices to introduce the technique of 'moxa' into European medicine. (DSB). Hunt: 161 - Adams A 802. - Wellcome I: 232. - Not in Waller.

Semplici dell'eccellente M. Lvigi Angvillara, Liquali in piu Pareri à diuersi nobili huomini appaiono...

Venegia (Venice), Vincenzo Valgrisi, 1561. Small 8vo. Contemp. full vellum. Covers a bit soiled and with remains of ink-writing on both covers. Small nicks to edges. Endpapers renewed with old paper. Old written owners name on titlepage: Antonio Cappini. 304,(32) pp. A few stains and a few scattered brownspots. Faint browning to lower margin of some leaves. Fine woodcut initials throughout.

The extremely scarce first edition of this botanical classic, which still remains an important source for historical nomenclature and floristic studies. "Little is known of Anguillara's early life. In 1539 he became associated with Luca Ghini at the latter's private botanical garden, first in Bologna, then in Pisa in 1544. Two years later, Anguillara became the first director of the botanical garden in Padua, the oldest of its kind in Europe. He remained at Padua, supervising a garden that received favorable notice from many distinguished visitors, until 1561... He became herbalist to the Duke of Ferrara and continued his botanical travels." (D.S.B. I:167). The present work is Anguillara's only known book. The work was written over a long period (1549-60) and is divided into fourteen 'pareri' ("opinions"), each of which is dedicated to a contemporary Italian physician. "(t)he book is principally devoted to the identification of the plants known to Dioscorides and the other ancient writers on materia medica. Because of his travels in Greece, Italy, France, and Asia Minor and his great personal knowledge of plant life throughout the Meditarranean basin, Anguillare was among the best-equipped of sixteenth-century botanists to make such a study. Approximately 1,540 plants are discussed by Anguillara, but in no discernible systematic order. Each plant is described, its classical name established (often with vernacular synonyms appended), and its medical and alimentary uses mentioned, along with its habitat, literary references, and the location where Anguillara found it. The descriptions are sufficiently full and accurate that the majority of his plants have been identified by modern historians of botany. Frequently cited by seventeenth-century botanists, the "Semplici" still remains an important source for historical nomenclature and floristic studies. He is commemorated today by the genus "Angillaria (Liliaceae)" named in his honor by Robert brown (1810)." (DSB, I:167). Greene in his "Landmarks of Botanical History", calls this book "The greatest book of botany which had ever been written in Italy."- Pritzel: 187. - Waller: 430 - Graesse I: p. 131. - Not in Wellcome, not in Hunt, not in Jackson.

Venetiis, Franciscis Senensem, 1592. 4to. Contemp. full vellum. Large paper copy. Faint handwritten title in ink on spine. Old owners name at bottom of titlepage. Printers wood-cut device on both titles. (4),80,(8) leaves. (= 4 unnumb., 1-57, 58-60 unnumb. and 61-80 and 8 unnumb.). With 50 fine wood-engraved illustrations in the text, all nearly full-page. Throughout fine and clean with only a few scattered brownspots.

Scarce first edition of the first scientific study of Egyptian plants, a pioneer study which constitutes Alpinus' single most important work as well as the work which introduced exotic plants to the still-paricial European botanical circles. Alpino graduated from Padua and travelled through the Greek Islands and Egypt from 1580 to 1583. In 1603 he was appointed director of the botanical garden at Padova and professor at the university. Some of Alpini's original descriptions were included in the writing of Linnaeus, who regarded him with sufficient esteem to name the genus 'Alpinia' (Zinggiberraceae) in his honor. 57 plants and trees are described in this work, and 49 are illustrated. Alpini's medical training led him to approach the new flora in the traditional manner of attempting to correlate these plants with the names and descriptions found in classical sources. When this proved impossible, he described the plant under its local name. The coffee-plant is mentioned. - The second part, the appendix with the title "De Balsamo", was first published separately in Venezia in 1591. It has one illustration and its own title-page. - Pritzel:441. - Adams A803. - Nissen, no. 20. - Hunt:164.

When Hooker returned from his botanical excursions, first to Iceland, then to France, Switzerland and Northern Italy, he devoted himself to the formation of his "Herbarium", which became of worldwide renown among botanists. In 1841 he was appointed director of the Royal Botanical Garden at Kew, where he founded the first museum of economic botany. "Hooker spent twelve years at Halesworth, during which he produced his British Jungermanniae, with his own illustrations, widely considered to be his most beautiful work. This book established hepaticology as an independent entity and made Hooker's reputation." (Mea Allan in DSB). Francis Boott (1792-1863), to whom this copy was given, was a friend of Hooker.
